Itimad Ud Daulah Tomb

The Itimad Ud Daulah Tomb was built in 1625 A.D to house the grave of Mirza Ghiyas Beg, who was the father of the Empress Nur Jahan and also the prime minister in the court of Emperor Jehangir, Nur Jahan's husband. Since he had been granted the title of Itimad Ud Daulah, meaning 'Pillar of the State', the tomb had been named so.

Situated just km away from the Taj Mahal, Agra, the Itimad Ud Daulah Tomb is also known as the 'Baby Taj' as both these monuments share certain common stylistic features, such as a tomb in white marble surrounded by a formal garden and the use of inlaywork in marble to create floral or geometric designs. Surprisingly, the Itimad Ud Daulah Tomb was constructed way before the Taj Mahal came into conception.

The tomb is built in the classic charbagh pattern with plush green lawns surrounding the marble tomb structure. The tomb is flanked by 4 minarets placed at each corner of the marble platform. Within the tomb, one can see the intricate peitra dura work, along with marble lattice screens in the central chamber of the tomb. Besides Mirza Ghiyas tomb, lies the grave of one of his wife Asmat Begum. Enjoy a fasinating tour of Itimad Ud Daulah Tomb during your Agra tour with us.
