Historical Facts About Taj Mahal

One of the well known Mughal Emperors, Shah Jahan constructed this exquisite piece of artwork for his beloved wife, Queen Mumtaz Mahal. The literal meaning of Taj Mahal is Crown Palace. This is a mausoleum where you will find the grave of Mumtaz Mahal. Later on, the grave of Shah Jahan was laid beside the grave of Mumtaz Mahal.

Queen Mumtaz Mahal was actually known by the name Arjumand Banu. And according to Muslim norms, the lady gets another name after marriage and this is the name she is addressed by. So, the queen’s name changed to Mumtaz Mahal.

While accompanying her husband to Burhanpur on a military campaign, Mumtaz Mahal breathed her last as she gave birth to their 14thchild. But before her death, she secured a promise from Shah Jahan that he would "build a tomb in her honor such as the world had never seen before". And from the ashes of Mumtaz Mahal's tragic death was born the idea of the Taj Mahal.

Important Aspects Of Taj Mahal

It took 22 long years for the Taj Mahal to get completed. As many as 22,000 workers made their valuable contribution of style and art to complete this world famous landmark. The total cost involved in building the Taj was Rs 32 million.

Skilled craftsmen from places like Multan, Delhi, Qannauj�and Lahore were brought in for the task. Other craftsmen were brought in from Bukhara, Baghdad�and Shiraz etc. The main architect who built the Taj Mahal was Ustad Isa.

Architectural Specification Of Taj Mahal

Platform

There is a square platform which is raised well above the ground. The Taj Mahal stands tall on this platform, the dimension of the same being 186 X 186 Feet. The 4 corners of the platform are truncated and therefore, form an octagon which is unequal.

Central Dome

The diameter of the central dome is 58 Feet and the height is 213 Feet. There are 4 subsidiary chambers that flank this structure. Each of the minarets measure 162.5 Feet and are slender and graceful.

The exterior as well as the interiors of the mausoleum is decorated with flower designs and calligraphy. Precious gems of Jasper and Agate are used in the floral designs. The main archway has passage from the Quran which are chiseled on to the archway and its walls.

Other Structures Inside Taj Mahal

There are other structures inside the Taj Mahal too. There is a mosque on the left and a guest house on the right. There is a huge garden which is well maintained till date. The garden has 4 pools in which you will get to see the reflection of the Taj Mahal. This is spectacular sight and appears best on a full moon night.

Reaching Taj Mahal

Once you are in Agra, reaching Taj Mahal is easy. Several public buses ply within the city. And you can avail one of them. You can also hire a car and reach the Taj Mahal. This is comparatively easier as you can tour around other interesting places too in Agra. And if you traveling to Agra for the first time, hiring a cab is probably the best option you can choose.
