Shekhawati

The charming region of Shekhawati in Rajasthan is often referred to as a 'open-air gallery' because of its profusion of painted havelis (mansions) that are each more beautiful than the other. Since tourism in Shekhawati is still in its fancy, one can have a great time exploring the quiet little towns at leisure. Camel safaris are a popular way of traveling through the different towns of Shekhawati.

Art and architecture have been a part and a parcel of Shekhawati region since the olden times. Unlike other parts of Rajasthan whose history were shaped by wars, its art that has dominated Shekhawati rather than invaders. The Shekhawati region was founded by Rao Shehka and the region grew rich due to the levies imposed on the passing caravans. Ultimately it were the wealthy merchants who were responsible for the creating some of the loveliest mansions that can be seen in Rajasthan.

There are many wonderful towns in the Shekhawati region including the famous Nawalgarh, Mandawa, Jhunjhunu, Fatehpur, Dundlod and Mukandgarh that form the crux of the major cities that are the prime tourist attractions of Shekhawati.

Shopping in Shekhawati is a unique experience where you can buy beautiful fresco designs that are replicated on cloth and paper and whole lot of other ethnic products that reflect the art of the region. The low-legged Shekhawati chair and the special metal utensils of the region are particularly noteworthy. Travel to Shekhawati is easy as it is easily accessible through various means of transport.
