International Kite Festival, Jaipur

Celebrated for three consecutive days, the International Kite Festival in Jaipur is inaugurated on 14th January- the occasion of Makar Sankranti that welcomes the onset of the spring season. Celebrated with great enthusiasm, the Kite Festival sees the sky of Jaipur dotted with the myriad hues of red, blue, green and fuchsia kites that jostle with each other for supremacy

An occasion for fun and laughter, the International Kite Festival sees kite flying enthusiasts from all over the country converging in Jaipur to take part in this merry festival that is replete with joyous excitement, thrill and eager anticipation. The three-day international kite festival starts with an inauguration at the Polo Ground, Jaipur. A massive extravaganza follows, with Indian Air Force helicopters releasing kites from the sky, and hundreds of schoolchildren releasing balloons from the ground.

The festival is divided into two major sections- the 'Kite War' and the 'Friendly Kite Flying Session'. Both these sections see massive participation ranging from novices to aces. Everyone joins in this riotous celebration and victory cries reverberate from rooftops to the accompaniment of drums as adversary's kites are cut down.

There is also competition amongst kites for their looks and designs with prestigious trophies at stake. On the final day of the International Kite Festival in Jaipur, Rajasthan, the main Kite Fight takes place on the delightful Umaid Bhawan Palace Lawns with locals egging on the participants as the multi-hued kites soar higher and higher. Here the grand finals of the "Fighter Kite Competition" and the final judging of the "Display Kites" are held, followed by the prize distribution ceremony and the farewell dinner.
