Bundi

Located in the south of Rajasthan at a stone throw from Kota (36 kms), the medieval town of Bundi still maintains its traditional character with élan that makes Bundi quite an interesting place to explore. Once a part of Kota, Bundi continues to be a place where life is largely untouched by the outside world. Surrounded by the Aravali hills on the three sides, the city of Bundi is further fortified by a massive wall with four immense gateways.

Bundi came into existence in early 11th century after Prithviraj Chauhan was defeated by Sultan Mohammed Ghauri. Some Chauhan nobles seeked shelter in Mewar and became allies to the Rana while other young warriors move towards the Chambal valley and overpowered the Meena and Bhil tribals-thus establishing their own kingdom of Hadoti. Later, two branches of Hadas formed two separates states of Kota and Bundi, on either side of the river Chambal.

Bundi is well known for its baoris (step wells), palaces and forts, shimmering lakes and the beautiful natural environs See the numerous step wells that can be seen all over the city of Bundi. Other tourist attractions in Bundi include Bundi Palace, Taragarh Fort and the Nagar Sagar Kund.

If you visit Bundi around July- August, you can witness the annual celebrations of Kajli Teej Festival that is held amongst great pomp and splendor that almost transforms this sleepy little town. Shopping in Bundi consists of cotton carpets at Nainwais, famous Kota paintings and Kota doria saries, stone statue art and wooden toys in Jhalawar and lac ki churi.

Bundi has a small railway station of its own with the major railhead at Kota that connects Bundi to various cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Udaipur. The nearest airport is at Jaipur and also has a good road networks that connect Bundi to major cities of Rajasthan.
