Bikaner
The desert city of Bikaner is a medieval city of Rajasthan that still manages to retain its old-world aura, which makes a tour of the city fascinating indeed. Popularly referred as the "Camel Country", the city is also renowned for the best riding camels in the world hardly a wonder considering the fact that Bikaner is home to the largest camel breeding farm in Bikaner.
The city of Bikaner came into being in the 15th century when it was founded by Rao Bikaji, a descendent of Jodha (founder of Jodhpur). Being strategically placed on the ancient caravan routes that linked Asia to North India and the Gujarat seaports was the key to Bikaner's prosperity in the olden times.
A visit to Bikaner leads you to a tour of the city's grandiose forts and palaces such as Junagarh Fort and Lalgarh Palace besides the other tourist attractions of Bikaner. Shopping in Bikaner is an all time favorite with tourists who go back home laden with fabulous leather and woolen products such as shoes, bags, belts and chairs besides the trademark rugs and carpet made of camel wool.
Bikaner is very well connected by a good network of roads and rail tracks to all the major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Calcutta, Jodhpur and Jaipur while the nearest airport is at Jodhpur at a distance of 235 kms
