Ajmer

Situated on the shore of Ana Sagar Lake, the city of Ajmer, Rajasthan is an important centre of pilgrimage for people professing the Muslim faith. The historic city of Ajmer was founded by Ajai Pal Chauhan, and remained a stronghold of the Chauhan clan till 1193 AD, when Ajmer fell under the Mughal rule of Mohammed Ghouri. Hence you can see the unique influences of mixed rule in Ajmer even today.

Ajmer, located at about 130 km southwest of Jaipur is flanked by Jaipur and Tonk districts in the east, Pali in the west; Nagaur district in the north and Bhilwara district is in the south. The city of Ajmer is also home to the prestigious Mayo College that was an exclusive school opened by the British in 1875 for Indian nobility and still functions today as an all-boys school.

The city has myriad tourist attractions some of which have a religious importance as well. Visits to the Dargah, Taragarh Fort and the museum reveal a lot about the rich cultural heritage and the glorious past of Ajmer. Shopping in Ajmer is especial fun where you can choose from a range of products such as antiques, curios, jewelry, tie and dye fabrics, embroidered shoes (Mojaris) and trinkets.

The city of Ajmer is totally transformed during the Urs Festival that is held at the Dargah to commemorate the Sufi saint's symbolic union with God. Witness the spectacular festival that is sure to prove a memorable experience as you tour the city of Ajmer. Ajmer is easily accessible by all means of transport with the nearest airport being the Sanganeri Airport at Jaipur. Also as Ajmer lies on the Delhi-Mumbai railway line, there are no hassles of finding a train connection from several major cities of India.
