Silent Valley National Park

The Silent Valley National Park, which forms the core of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve is a pristine gift of nature that had been preserved with great care. Declared a reserved land under the Forest Act and later notified as a Reserved Forest by the Government of Madras as early as 1914, the Silent Valley National Park boasts of an almost unbroken ecological history.

According to the legend of the yore, the Silent Valley National Park was mentioned in the Mahabharatha by the term Sairandhri Vanam, which is also the word the locals use to refer to the National Park. The mythological aspect is further strengthened by the presence of River Kunthi, which descends from the Nilgiri hills, an altitude of 2000 m above sea level, and traverses the entire length of the valley and rushes down to the plains through the deep forest. A peculiar aspect of the ricer is that it never turns brown but always remains crystal clear.

The Silent Valley National Park is located 40 kms from Mannarkkad, in Kerala, India. Sprawling over an area of 90 sq km in all, the Silent Valley National Park protects an extremely fragile and unique expanse of tropical evergreen rain forests lying above the equator and the forest strip, which causes summer rains in Kerala.

The prolific flora of the Silent Valley National Park comprises of about 1000 species of plants that are an absolute for any naturalist. You will also across a wide range of wild animals such as lion - tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, bonnet macaque, tiger, leopard (Panther), leopard cat, fishing act, common palm civet, small Indian civer, brown plam civet, ruddy mongoose, stripenencked mongoose, wild dog, sloth bear, otter, flying squirrel, Malabar gaint squirrel, Indian pangolin (scaly anteater), Porcupine, wild boar, sambar, spotted deer, barking deer, mouse deer, gaur and elephant.
