Periyar National Park
Situated high up the Western Ghats in Kerala, India, the Periyar National Park was formed in 1895 when a dam was built, which functions as the permanent source of water for the local wildlife. Though Periyar National Park is more of a tiger reserve, one can enjoy a wide range of wildlife inside the park, with the prime attraction being the Indian elephants.
Other wildlife attractions of the Periyar National Park include the leopard, wild dog, barking deer, mouse deer, Nilgiri langur (a primate), bonnet macaque, sambhar, porcupines, squirrels, gaur (Indian bison), wild boar and sloth bear, all of which can be spotted easily. If you are lucky, you can witness the majestic tigers during an early morning safari. But it is the sight of the elephants frolicking about in the waters that most tourists carry back as memories from the Periyar National Park.
