Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary
The Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Devikulam taluk of Idukki district, in the rain shadow region of the Western Ghats. Sprawling over an area of 90.422 sq kms, the region was given recognition as a wildlife sanctuary in 1984 as it is only the second habitat for the endangered giant grizzled squirrel in India besides being home to the unique thorny scrub forest with Xerophytic species
As you go on jeep safaris, you will come across a range of wild elephants that have made Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala India their home. Enjoy spotting tigers, elephant, bonnet macaques, gaur, Kraits, spotted deer, spectacled cobras, sambar, turtles, vipers, little cormorants, darters and black eagles.
As you trek through the changing topography that provides breathtaking spectacle of craggy rocks, notice the unique floral diversity of the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. Comprising of dry deciduous forest, thorny scrub forests, high sholas and wet grasslands, the sanctuary is a haven for naturalists. Among the species of flora include Acacia arabica (Karivelam), Acacia leucofolia (Velvelam), Santalum album (Chandanam), Anogeissuslatifolia (Mazhukanjiram), Elaeocarpus recurvatus (Bhadraksham) and Strobilanthus kunthianus (Neelakurinji).
The Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is easily accessible through by good roads leading from the airports of Coimbatore and Kochi. The nearest railway stations are Aluva (200kms) and Pollachi (60kms). Tourists are welcome at any time of the year inside the beautiful environs of the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, and there are ample accommodation options available at Munnar, Marayoor and Udumalpetta.
