Kerala Travel Guide

A Journey to India offers some tips for travelers to India to ensure that you are well prepared for your Kerala tour.

  • A visa is required for entry into India. All Indian consulates are authorised to issue visas to tourists. Six-month tourist visas can be extended further. A visa is only issued if you have a valid ticket to travel to India and provided you clear certain security and background checks.
  • Communication wouldn't pose a problem as English is widely spoken all over Kerala. The people are friendly, hospitable and tourist friendly in general.
  • Please remember that there are certain Hindu pilgrimage centres in Kerala and other religious shrines that don't permit entry to foreigners within the temple precincts. Many Muslim shrines do not permit women to enter. Also, take care to remove your shoes before entering in any holy place of worship and wear modest clothing.
  • As the summer can be get uncomfortably warm and humid in Kerala, carry plenty of loose cotton clothing. If you are planning to sunbathe on the beaches of Kerala, keep sunscreens close to you.
  • Always drink from packaged mineral water, which are easily available all over Kerala, India. Stick to reputed brands and check the seal before purchasing the water.
  • Kerala cuisine may seem a bit too spicy for the uninitiated. If you have a sensitive constitution, avoid eating that looks too red or combine your food with yogurt.
  • Since malaria is prevalent in some parts of Kerala, do carry a mosquito repellent or buy from the local shops in Kerala, especially if you are traveling around the monsoon season.
