Kozhikode

Kozhikode, also known as Calicut has an illustrious past that is reflected in its present. Known in the history books as the place where Vasco da Gama, the first European to sail to India landed in 1498 AD, Kozhikode still maintains its role as a commercial center of Kerala, which was established with the coming of Dutch, French and British who came trading for spices to the shores of Kozhikode.

A tour of Kozhikode would lay bare to you the charms of this enchanting region. The Kozhikode Beach, which is a favorite with tourists. Feel the silvery sand underneath your feet and the cool breeze wafting by you as enjoy the glorious spectacle of the setting sun. Also see the Lighthouse, the Lions Park for children and the Aquarium that has a good collection of marine life and freshwater fish that occupy the pride of the place on the beach. Watch the enamoring dolphins frolicking in the azure waters of the Arabian Sea at the Dolphin's Point.

If you are interested in culture and history, set about exploring the numerous museums and galleries of Kozhikode. The Pazhassirajah Museum, showcasing ancient mural paintings, bronzes, old coins, models of temples, and megalithic structures, is a major tourist attraction of Kozhikode. There is also the Art Gallery that is treasure trove of paintings done by Raja Ravi Varma, India's first artist to make use of oil colors. The paintings center around the portrayal of mythological events, royal personage and situations of day-to-day life.
