Kollam

The district of Kollam, also known as Quilon represents the exotic gateway to the refreshing backwaters of Kerala. With above 30% of the city immersed in Asthamudi Lake, Kollam is a beautiful backwater destination as well. Cruise through the Kollam backwaters towards Alappuzha, which is an eight-hour boat ride.

Kollam was a thriving seaport in the ancient times and has still managed to retain its significance as a major port city of Kerala. The port of Neendakara is a major hub of trawlers even today. Witness the interesting historic remnants and a number of temples built in the traditional ornate architectural style on your tour of Kollam with A Journey to India.

The seaside village of Thangasseri is home to the ruins of an 18th century Portuguese fort and churches. Marvel at the 144 ft high Light House that is open to visitors. If you are searching for peace, visit the secluded Thirumullavaram beach where you can laze around in leisure, with just the nature as your sole companion. Other tourist attractions of Kollam include Mayyand - an important pilgrim center of Kerala. Known for its shrines and temples, the most important of the nine temples here is the Subramanya temple at Umayanallor.

From Kollam, you can enjoy short excursions to Sasthamkotta, Ochira, Kulathupuzha , Thenmala , Ariankavu and Alappuzha. Though the nearest airport is situated 21 kms at Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam has excellent array of road and rail services, Kollam being an important railhead of the southern railways. This makes travel to Kollam pretty interesting. There are also plenty of tourist accommodations at Kollam.
