Mapusa


Mapusa is a Goan town, situated in the northern part of Goa. It is connects Mumbai and Trivandrum. Mapusa is located 13kms from Panjim, the capital of Goa. Mapusa stands as the headquarters of Bardez Taluka.Mapusa was spelt as Mapuca under the reign of the Portuguese. Mapusa is almost a neighbor to the Goa’s tourism industry centers.

History of Mapusa

Mapusa has an interesting history. This town was well organized and had a good Community Farming system. This Community Farming system was also known as Gaunkari. The system existed in Mapusa even before the reigns of the Marathas, Aryans, Sultans and the Portuguese. Since then, Mapusa has been predominantly famous for its excellent market.

Unique feature of Mapusa

Mapusa is a tourist spot, apart from being a commercial town. Mapusa has a huge local population, which can be seen especially on Fridays. Friday’s are when Mapusa seems at its best. On this day, Mapusa celebrates its traditional market day. Every Friday, Mapusa has a local fair which includes goods from nearby towns and villages. These goods are sold in the Friday fair of Mapusa at reasonable prices.

This Friday fair has special goods such as, vegetables, local fruits, spices, dry-fruits, agricultural products, clothes and so on. There is also a fish market, displaying the various sea fishes. The market is a pleasure to visit. It has everything which you can expect to find in a fair or a market.

Sri Kalika Temple

This is a Goddesses Kali temple which is built in a unique style that combines modern architectural style with aesthetic content. This temple is located 14 kilometers from Mapusa.

Shri Morjee Temple

Just like the Shri Kalika Temple, Shri Morjee Temple is also a great tourist attraction of Mapusa. It temple is dedicated to Bodhgeshwar or Baba Kanakeshwar. The temple is mainly famous because it said that the deity fulfills the wishes of one who prays with devotion.

Mascarenhas Mansion

This is a ‘must see’ tourist spot of Mapusa. It attracts tourists with its unique Portugal architecture. The mansion has excellent balconies with engraved glass floorings. Another attraction of this mansion is its L shaped seat, made of special wood.

Anjuna Beach

If you are planning to visit Goa, you just cannot afford to miss the beautiful Anjuna beach. The Anjuna beach is located 8 kilometers from Mapusa. It is one of the most popular beaches of Goa. Anjuna beach attracts tourists with its coconut trees and golden sand with mesmerizing turquoise waters. This is an ideal beach for swimmers to play around with water.
