Birla Mandir

Birla Mandir, also known as Lakshmi Narayan Mandir, was built in 1938 by Raja Baldev Das, who belonged to the powerful business family of Birlas. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu and his consort, Goddess Lakshmi, the aesthetic temple also contains separate shrines of other Hindu Gods as well.

As you enter the sanctum of the temple, you will be greeted with tall carved domes ornamented with circular ribbed motifs that are a telling proof that the Birla Mandir that took six years to be completed has been built according to the ancient Orissa architectural style. Even though all the deities belong to the Hindu faith, the temple is open to all, irrespective of caste and creed of a person as per the wish expressed by Mahatma Gandhi when he inaugurated the temple.

Tour the beautifully designed temple and soak in the divine atmosphere that permeates from the very core of the temple. On the walls, you can see various holy Hindu symbols like Swastik and Aum along with inscriptions from the holy books of the Gita and the Upanishads. There is also a Gita Bhawan, which displays instances from the Indian mythology through paintings. There is also a small Buddha temple within the precincts that depicts fresco paintings from the life of Lord Buddha.

Admire the tall spires of the temple that beautify the city's skyline as visit the Laxmi Narayan Temple located in the centre of Delhi. The highest tower in the temple is impressively 165 ft high. The interior of the temple walls are adorned with paintings done by specialist artists from Jaipur, which is further complimented by the beautiful lawns and water fountains on the outside along with an artificial mountainous backdrop.

The temple is quite a favorite with international tourists as well as with the locals. You can see foreigners mingling with Indians during the festival of Janmashtami that is celebrated with special pomp at the Lakshmi Narayan Mandir
