Museums and Galleries
Given the rich cultural heritage of Delhi, it is but natural for Delhi to have scores of museums and galleries that showcase the glorious past of Delhi. Also, being the capital city, Delhi is a natural choice for being the art and culture centre of the country. A haven for art aficionados, tourists are sure to have a gala time as they tour the different museums and galleries of Delhi. Tourist attractions of Delhi in their own right, some of the major museums and galleries of Delhi are:
National Museum
Situated in Janpath, near the Connaught Place, the National Museum is a premier museum of Delhi, India that has an exquisite collection of Indian bronze, terracotta and wood sculptures and other antiquities ranging from rare manuscripts, miniature paintings and tribal costumes to musical instruments that belong to diverse civilizations and empires such as Indus Valley, Chola empire, Mauryan empire, Vijaynagar period and much more. The National Museum also houses a Buddhist Gallery that houses relics of the Buddha from Piprahwa. There is also a Jewellery Gallery within the premises.
The National Gallery of Modern Art
The National Gallery of Modern Art, situated near the India Gate, showcases contemporary Indian art. A visit to this beautiful gallery would reveal permanent exhibits by renowned Indian artists such as Nandalal Bose, Rabindranath Tagore, Jamini Roy. It houses an excellent collection of works by both Indian and colonial artists. The National Gallery of Modern Art is housed in the erstwhile residence of Maharaja of Jaipur
Tibet Museum
The Tibet Museum displays ceremonial items that have been brought out of Tibet when Dalai Lama fled Chinese occupation. Tourists can also buy beautiful Tibetan handicrafts from a shop within the museum precincts. The museum, situated on Lodi road also functions as a centre for Tibetan and Buddhist studies while preserving the unique cultural heritage of Tibet.
The Rail Transport Museum is a must for rail buffs. Its vintage display includes the oldest locomotive in the world-still working, the Viceregal Dinning Car (1889) and the Prince of Wales Saloon (1876). Children can enjoy a ride on the miniature rail track.
International Dolls Museum
A veritable delight, the Dolls Museum houses a collection of dolls- big and small from over 85 different countries. Numbering over 6000 in all, some of these dolls are dressed in beautiful costumes specific to its country of origin. Dolls from India constitute about one-third of the entire collection.
The Crafts Museum
The Crafts Museum Directly showcases the rural arts and crafts of India. Situated next to Purana Qila, the Crafts Museum has a quaint charm to it what with mud huts with thatched roofs and painted walls lending a authentic rural ambience to the place. The museum has a collection of traditional Indian crafts in textiles, metal, wood and ceramics.
The Nehru Memorial Museum
The Nehru Memorial Museum is the former residence of the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru that has now been converted into a museum. The allure of the museum lies in the fact that that the rooms have been left intact as they were.
