Independence Day

The Independence Day is Celebrated every year on August 15 to commemorate the day on which India finally regained her Independence from the British rule after hundred years of fierce struggle in the year 1947. It is a truly national celebration as it transcends above all communal, regional and religious barriers and is given equal importance in all parts of the country.

Independence Day is marked by flag hoisting and cultural performances at the state level. In Delhi however, Independence Day celebrations are grand indeed. The celebrations are kick started by the Prime Minister of India who addresses the nation from atop the majestic Red Fort, which is followed up by a march past of the police and armed forces. Millions of viewers watch this procession by the means of live telecast on television.

In Delhi, as the Independence Day comes near, it is a very common sight to see street hawkers selling Independence Day merchandise such as plastic flags and tri-colored balloons, stickers, tee-shirts and greeting cards.
