Akshardham Temple
The Akshardham Temple is the newest architectural marvel that has been added to Delhi's rich architectural heritage. Inaugurated on Dec 7, 2005, the magnificent Akshardham Temple promises to go down in the annals of history as one of the most beautiful temple- complex. Constructed under the patronage of Bochasanvasi Aksharpurushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), the temple is a tribute to the glorious culture of India while, at the same time giving a unique glimpse of Hinduism as well.
Situated on the banks of River Yamuna in east Delhi, the Akshardham Temple is replete with about 20, 000 statues, floral motifs, arches and exquisitely carved pillars. Built entirely out of pink sandstone, the temple that sprawls over 100 acres took over five years to build and involved around 7000 master craftsmen. The architectural style is a fusion of various contrasting styles such as Rajasthani, Oriya, Gujarati, Mughal and Jain that further enhances the beauty of the temple.
The temple complex is divided into many sub-structures. The main monument has been built according to the ' Vaastu Shastra' is 141 feet high, 316 feet wide and 370 feet long with 234 ornate pillar eleven 72-foot-high huge domes (mandapams) and decorative arches, not to mention about 20, 000 sculptures of various Hindu gods and goddesses that adorn all the parts of the temple. Also, the monument is so designed as to stand on the shoulders of 148 huge elephants, which are encircled by a double-storied colonnade that depicts tales from the epics.

Apart from the main temple, there are exhibition halls that have tableaux depicting legends from Hindu mythology. You can also tour the IMAX theatre that will provide entertaining visual information about the various Hindu mythological stories. You can also sit in the midst of the lush lawns and enjoy being serenaded by a musical fountain. It also got a restaurant modelled on the Ajanta and Ellora caves and an ayurvedic bazaar.
