Chini ka Rauza
The Chini ka Rauza is a tomb built in the honor of Mulla Shukrullah Shirazi, who used to serve as a Prime Minister in court of Shah Jahan. Built in 1635 AD, the Chini ka Rauza tomb was built by Mulla Shukrullah Shirazi himself, who was also an acclaimed poet of his time, having written several poems under the pseudonym of 'Allami'
The Chini ka Rauza is famous for its glazed tile decoration that can be seen on both the interiors and exteriors of the structure. Use of architectural ornamentation like chhajja, brackets and balconies were restricted to provide enough space for glazed tile decoration and herein lies the uniqueness of the monument. This mausoleum is in fact a classic example of the Persian influence on Mughal architecture of that period.
Chini ka Rauza is built in a rectangular shape and is topped with a bulbous dome.
The actual tomb is square with 79 feet (8.48m) side while the central chamber is octagonal in shape having diameter of 27'10" (8.48m) and has eight arched recesses. Four, square chambers emerge from the central chamber and are connected to the side halls and outer porches. The central arch through which you can enter the Chini ka Rauza features inscriptions marked out with blue colored tiles.
The Chini ka Rauza tomb derives its names from the colorful glazed tiles (chini) that can be seen on the walls of the tomb. The walls are also decorated with inscriptions and inlay work. Even though it lies in a dilapidated condition today, you can still see traces of the exquisite glazed tile decoration work.
