Buland Darwaza

The Buland Darwaza in Fatehpur Sikri, near Agra is victory gateway built by the Emperor Akbar to commemorate his triumph over that king of Khandesh/Gujarat in 1573. Buland Darwaza literally means 'High Door', what with the victory march rising to an impressive height of 40 metres.

Dominating the neighboring landscape, the red sandstone structure of Buland Darwaza can be seen from afar. Gateway to the city of Fatehpur Sikri, the Buland Darwaza is beautifully decorated with white marble. The pillars and the chattris atop the Buland Darwaza contain calligraphic inscriptions from the Quran. But there is one inscription that reads 'The World is but a bridge, pass over but build no houses on it', which is a reflection on Akbar's religious tolerance as it was quoted by Jesus Christ.
