Akbar's tomb at Sikandra
The Akbar's tomb at Sikandra is befitting resting place for one of the Mughal Empire's greatest rulers, which despite being built in a spartan style according to the Timurid architecture retains a dignified aura.
Work on this beautiful mausoleum began during Akbar's reign and was completed by his son Jahangir after his death. On entering the tomb complex at Sikandara, you will pass through a huge arched gateway, which is very much similar to the Buland Darwaza at Fatehpur Sikri in Agra. The decoration on the gateway is strikingly bold, with its large mosaic patterns. Moving inwards, you will be greeted by beautiful gardens laid out in the charbagh pattern with the tomb situated in the centre. Besides the central tomb of Akbar, there is a small tomb in red sandstone that contains the grave of Akbar's wife Mariam, the mother of Jahangir.
Akbar's tomb is shaped like a pyramid and the actual grave below is painted in golden, green and blue hues. The tomb chamber has an open terrace where shade is provided by carved latticework screens. While the tomb is not on a large scale as that of Taj Mahal, Akbar's tomb at Sikandra is impressive in its own right.
